The Sapa Inca – the son of the sun
At the heart of the Inca Empire sat the Sapa Inca – the “unique lord”. He was both a religious and political figure. The Inca believed he was descended from the sun god Inti, and this connection to the cosmos helped them to justify their rule over dozens of civilisations across South America. For the Inca, religion and politics were intertwined.
