Eritrean migrant: They killed people. Right in front of my eyes.

He was forced to join the military at the age of 17. At 30 he says he was imprisoned by his government. Beaten. Tortured. No wonder then when he was released from his cell earlier this year he decided to join the many men, women and children who have fled Eritrea, seeking safety.

Now he is one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have risked their lives to get to Europe, and some to the UK.

There’s no reliable estimate of the number of irregular migrants who make it to this country – most actually come in legally and then outstay their welcome. But not the man who our Chief Correspondent Matthew Price spoke to.
