Mother of murdered teen Breck Bednar: I told police of suspicions

The mother of Breck Bednar on why she suspected her son was being groomed online.

The mother of murdered teen Breck Bednar tells Today how she suspected her son was being groomed online.

14 year-old Breck Bednar from Sussex loved gaming with friends. His mother Lorin LaFave says he knew all the group that he played with online, apart from one, a 19-year-old called Lewis Daynes.

In February this year Breck went to meet him and never came home. Daynes has now admitted that he murdered Breck.

Ms LaFave told Radio 4's Today programme: "There were several things that made me think he was being manipulated and controlled...he was starting to change and refuse to do family things".

"I gave the police a lot of information...but the conversation wasn't very interactive. I didn't get any feedback..I wasn't recommended to contact CEOP (The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)".

"I wish I had known about CEOP as I would have made a report to them as well as the police".

Breck's three siblings, triplets, heard of their brother's death from a text message which included an image of their deceased brother.

Ms LaFave said there's a public perception online grooming is only likely to affect children whose parents aren't looking after them and is now campaigning for better online safety guidelines, her advice to young gamers is "play virtual but live real" and know who you are gaming with.

In a statement Essex Police force say its voluntarily referred its contact with Lewis Daynes to the Independent Police Complaints Commission in February 2014 as it believed it was in the public interest to do so.

First broadcast on Today programme 1 December 2014.
