How did Victorian values affect life in the British Empire?
Many early British colonists in India respected and embraced Indian culture, including marrying Indian women. However, changing attitudes back in Britain began to find their way to the far fringes of empire, and greater division between the British and the Indian people began to emerge.
Christian missionaries carried these new puritanical values, and so did the wives of colonists (Memsahibs) coming to join husbands in India. British life and rule in India started to become more about preserving British values than accommodating new ones. The colonists started to live further apart from the Indians they ruled, and retreated to hill stations in the cooler climates of the mountains.
