Power sharing in South Africa

Nelson Mandela discusses why he pursued a policy of power sharing rather than an instant takeover of South Africa. He explains it was the most effective solution to transfer power while maintaining stability. Mandela recognised that he had the support of the majority of the population but he was also aware that South Africa was a divided society and side-lining the white minority could have created potential problems with opposition from the army, the civil service and business. First broadcast in 'Panorama' on 1 February 1993.
