Little Rock Crisis, 1957

In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in US society was unconstitutional. The ruling might have been simple but enforcing the law proved immensely difficult in the face of southern prejudice.

In 1957, Little Rock, Arkansas, Governor Faubus called out the National Guard to prevent nine black students entering the all-white high school. To enforce the integration policy, President Eisenhower flew in 1,000 combat troops.

Ernest Green, one of the black students, explains the psychological importance of seeing the government take such serious action to protect the rights of African American students.
