Birds of a feather

Loch Leven has two nature spots for the price of one - a national nature reserve and an RSPB reserve. Vast numbers of ducks and waders come here every year and Janet Sumner meets Colin Shaw to get help in identifying ducks when they are not in their colourful breeding plumage. They see pochard and tufted ducks. They all look a bit drab and worn out - after the breeding season birds change their feathers into their winter coat so that they are waterproofed for the rigours of winter. The size, shape, silhouette and behaviour of the duck is the way to identify them at this time of year.
