Sleepy seals

Skokholm has only two human inhabitants - the wardens. They rarely leave and get their weekly provisions by boat. Mike Dilger meets one of them, Jo Harvard. The island became a bird observatory in the 1930s - Britain's first - and ran until the 1970s when ringing stopped. Now the Wildlife Trust runs it for holidays, and up to 15 people come out for a few nights. On the way to the best place for seal watching Mike spots a chough - the most splendid and rare member of the crow family in Britain. Next he finds a grey seal floating motionless - is she dead? No, she's just having a snooze in the sunshine. There are about 20 cow seals on the island, and one bull cruising around. The smaller seals are last year's pups, and they are very curious. The sleepy seal checks Mike and Jo out then dozes off again.
