Durham dene
Mike Dilger meets up with local plant expert Arthur Bowes. Mike wants to see as many flowers and insects as he can. There are many mini-climates in the Castle Eden Dene, so there is a great diversity. The giant bell flower is found right through the area. They also see horse radish, sour thistle and horsetails. The horsetail is an ancient plant that was around when the dinosaurs were alive. A much bigger form of horsetail, together with tree ferns, laid down the Durham coalfield - so horsetail is a plant that is part of Durham's industrial heritage.
