Farmland fauna

The sandy soils in the Brecks are very fertile, so there are lots of farms here, but that doesn’t have to be bad news for wildlife. There is one animal that’s all over the place here and it’s pretty easy to spot – the hare. They may look somewhat rabbit-like but their habits are not the habits of rabbits. They don’t live underground; they have a little scrape called a form in which they have their babies. Much longer ears than rabbits, with those lovely black tips. Bill Oddie does rather like the fact that you call the males jacks and the females jills, although you can't really tell the difference this time of the year. You’ve heard of horse whispering - Bill tries a bit of hare whispering, except it’s really squeaking. The result is that he scares it off! The squeaking is supposed to be a leveret in despair, and the hare was supposed to come and look after him. But it's legged it over the horizon.
