Breckland

Breckland means ‘broken land’, or perhaps you should say exhausted land, meaning that many, many, many years ago it would have been woodland. The trees were then cleared and it became farmland, then it became grazing land and in fact it was so overgrazed that it eventually became exhausted. Nowadays, much of it we would call grassland or heathland, but what it definitely isn’t is wasteland. This is in fact one of the driest parts of Britain and especially in early August it can feel almost Mediterranean, except there's no sea. On the other hand, there’s an awful lot to see.
