Some typical Autumn activity: squirrels storing up for the winter and the local birds just relaxing now the breeding season's over. However for the Atlantic salmon it's just beginning. They're swimming from the sea way up river to the calmer water where they were born and that's where they'll lay their eggs - and nothing is going to stop them. Salmon try to leap up a waterfall. It's a big fish yes, but this waterfall here, it's not that little. It is about 10 foot high. These fish are going to have to contemplate not only swimming against the current but then leaping up. It's the equivalent of a bloke thinking 'Four double decker buses - I'll jump over that no problem'. The light just bounces off them. They've got that wonderful pinkish sheen on them, probably means they're in fine breeding fettle. One salmon makes the leap - but he's still got 12 miles to go. Late September: the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness'. Bill Oddie is mellow because on a calm sunny day like this, winter seems far, far away despite the signs of its coming.
