Grouse land

Sanjida O'Connell visits the man-made landscape of the North York Moors to meet gamekeeper George Thompson. The moor has some of the highest designations ever awarded to a piece of land - it's a special protection area and a SSSI. It is primarily a grouse moorland. Most of the North York Moors are managed for shooting, but that's of benefit to other creatures. There are 122 different species live on the moors, not just red grouse. At first glance it looks like a landscape of heather and grass, but burning the vegetation encourages variety and new growth. It's perfect for grouse, but other upland birds love it too. The best way to watch birds is to get to a vantage point and sit quietly in your car. After a few minutes the birds will get used to your presence and get on with their daily business.
