First steps
Calke Abbey is famous for its deer - there are about 120 red and fallow deer there. Sandija O'Connell has to whisper because she's sitting very close to a red deer doe who has just given birth. The best time to visit is therefore the spring. The fawn has been cooped up inside mum for nine months, and Sanjida witnesses its very fist steps. Calke's countryside is the backdrop to paintings by Derbyshire artist Pollyanna Pickering. She is painting the red deer, but they are rather skittish so she needs a lot of patience. The deer are always changing, so if you come at different times of year you'll see antlers dropped and start to regrow. At this point in spring they are covered in velvet.
