Orchid island
Rathlin Island is steeped in history: Robert the Bruce was inspired by a Rathlin spider, Marconi made his first commercial radio broadcast here, and Richard Branson landed here on one of his transatlantic balloon attempts. But Chris Packham has come to see the orchids. There are thousands here. Heath spotted orchids are not rare but are found in great profusion in springtime. One small plant is Rathlin's botanical jewel - it's pyramidal bugle, a plant found in only a handful of locations across Ireland.
