Seabird city

A visit to Bempton cliffs reveals fascinating geology and abundant seabirds.

Janet Sumner is in Bridlington on the east coast of Yorkshire. This is the gateway to one of the best seabird experiences in the UK. She's off on a three hour boat trip organised by the RSPB to the seabird colony on the 350 foot high cliffs at Bempton. The cliffs are white because they are made out of chalk. You have to prepare for the noise and smell of the birds. It's a 360 degree bird experience - they are in the air, on the water and on the cliffs above. RSPB volunteer John Swift tells Janet about the birds. The cliffs are like multistorey flats for birds. Spring is the best time of the year to see them - many birds are nesting and courting. Bempton also has a geological treasure - the chalk rocks are buckled and folded down into the sea by continental drift. There is a very different perspective of the seabirds from on top of the cliffs - they are everywhere! The kittiwakes are especially busy. They are in a ploughed field near the cliff top, gathering mud and grass for their nests.
