Camogie currently faces the most fundamental change in its existence 鈥 integration with the Gaelic Athletic Association by 2027. In this, its 120th year, the history, evolution and future of camogie are explored.
With contributions from All-Star camogie players past and present, two former presidents of the Camogie Association and Gaelic Games鈥 academics, this documentary examines the challenges the association and the sport have overcome in 120 years. How did the early founders carve out a space for women within the sporting and cultural revolution at the turn of the 20th century?
Shut out from playing within the GAA, early advocates of camogie adopted their own rules and created a sport for women, staunchly guarding their autonomy. Thirty years later, this fierce independence caused disagreements that almost tore the association apart.
