An audience with Queen Shirley Collins

The best folk and acoustic music from Britain and beyond, with guest Shirley Collins.

The best folk and acoustic music from Britain and beyond.

This week, Shirley Collins chats to Mark.

Shirley, sometimes called the Queen of English Folk, has been a defining voice in the genre since the late-1950s.

Her landmark work with late sister Dolly Collins, with The Albion Country Band, with Davy Graham, and on her own, has helped to shape folk music in these islands. She also collected songs for the folk revival, travelling to America with Alan Lomax to record rural singers.

After a long time away from music-making, Shirley has released a string of acclaimed albums in her 80s, the latest being Archangel Hill. Shirley's present-day label-mates at Domino Records include Arctic Monkeys, Anna Calvi and Cat Power.

Mark talks to Shirley from her Sussex home.
