Writer and broadcaster Anna Magnusson, and Church of Scotland minister and former Moderator of the General Assembly the Very Revd Dr John Chalmers, join Cathy to reflect on a very difference Remembrance this year.

In the shadow of a divisive US election and a challenging year at home and abroad and as we continue to grapple with a global pandemic, how we can remain hopeful finding space to heal the pain of loss and divisions between communities.

During the early days of lockdown in Scotland, Professor David Bebbington read through his father’s wartime letters for the first time. His father Bill wrote to his wife Vera regularly during the Second World War. The letters revealed new insights into his father’s military service, and raised questions for David about his own life and his thoughts about the conflict.

Alongside the many service men and women that are remembered each year, the contribution animals have made to the war effort is being increasingly recognised. Emma Ward, one of the trustees of the National Military Working Dogs Memorial charity, chats to Cathy about establishing a memorial to commemorate these animals.

At 11 o’clock here on 91Èȱ¬ Radio Scotland we will keep the silence for Remembrance along with the rest of the nation. Taking us there the thoughts of Professor of Practical Theology and Pastoral Care at the University of Aberdeen, John Swinton, who reflects on the meaning of Remembrance in this turbulent year.

We’ve found ourselves spending more time nearer to home and paying closer attention to our surroundings. At a time when humanity’s relationship with nature is experiencing a renewal, a new book ‘For The Love Of Trees: A Celebration of People and Trees’ captures this. Cathy talks to the co-authors Vicky Allan and Anna Deacon.
