This week's wines
Grilled lamb cutlets with chickpea and feta dressingFinest Rioja Reserva, 2015, SpainTesco, 拢8.50
Made exclusively for Tesco by top producer Baron de Ley this is such a smart Rioja for the money, beautifully mellow with smoky raspberry fruits, warm baked spices and that expensive-tasting lick of oak you get with aged Rioja. Made from hand-harvested Tempranillo grapes, this one鈥檚 aged in oak barrels for a year and a half (to be called Rioja Reserva the wine must be aged for a total of three years with at least one year in oak barrels and at least six months in bottles). Also, 2015 was a very good vintage in Rioja (proof is in the glass)! Why: Rioja is a real go-to wine when it comes to lamb, working whether it鈥檚 pan-fried, barbecued or slow roasted. There鈥檚 something about the balance of fruit, tannins (which something meaty like lamb needs) and that warm, earthy spice that makes it such a winning combination.聽
Strawberry fool with cornflake granolaOrganic Sparkling Ros茅, ItalyAldi, 拢7.99
An organic sparkling ros茅 from a family-owned organic producer in Veneto in Italy, this is labeled as Extra Dry which even though you鈥檇 think it would mean really dry is in fact a little sweeter than Brut. It鈥檚 a 50/50 blend including Glera, the Prosecco grape, and Pinot Noir giving it colour and oomph. It鈥檚 organic and suitable for vegans, too. Why: Need a wine with light, fresh flavours to balance with the fruit, custard and granola. The red fruits in the wine glass match those in the pudding glass and frothy bubbles work brilliantly with cream.聽
