Kathryn Tickell and The Darkening

Brilliant musician Kathryn Tickell plays music from her new band project, The Darkening.

This week, Mark is joined by brilliant Northumbrian pipe and fiddle player, composer, bandleader and broadcaster, Kathryn Tickell.

Kathryn and accordionist Amy Thatcher perform music from new big-band project, The Darkening. Their new album, Hollowbone, features thrilling new twists on the Northumbrian tradition, taking inspiration from Hadrian鈥檚 Wall for a long view on modern barriers and empires.

Raised in Northumberland, Kathryn Tickell came from a musical family and retains a close connection to the area's musical community. Since releasing her debut album, On Kielder Side, as a teenager in 1984, she鈥檚 become an ambassador for the musical heritage of North East England, collaborating with countless musicians from inside and outside the folk world, including The Cheiftains, The Penguin Caf茅 Orchestra, Jimmy Nail, Boys of the Lough and Sting.

Kathryn has an OBE and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland. On the radio, she hosts Music Planet on 91热爆 Radio 3.
