Trust Me, I'm Your Barber
Dirty Sanchez’s Matthew Pritchard meets a group of barbers who, by talking and listening to their customers, are working through to improve men’s mental health and prevent suicide
Barbers have a unique relationship of trust and friendship that often creates a strong bond allowing men to open up and discuss subjects that they wouldn't usually talk about. Dirty Sanchez’s Matthew Pritchard meets a group of barbers who, by talking and listening to their customers, are working through to improve men’s mental health and prevent suicide.
Statistics show that male suicide is a massive problem in the UK; 76% of all suicides in the UK are men and it's the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. This programme is the story of the Lions Barber Collective, an international collection of top barbers who have come together to help raise awareness and smash the taboo subject of mental health and suicide. A barber shop may not be the most obvious place to discuss mental health but it is happening, and when you think that there’s 2000 hours a year that hairdressers spend listening – it’s little wonder.
Pritch will meet the members of the collective – including their founder Tom Chapman, who, inspired by the loss of his own friend to suicide, established the scheme. He'll meet the Welsh barber who is leading the way from his Griffithstown salon. And along the way, Pritch will talk about his own mental health problems.
Something for the weekend sir? Or something for life…?
