Where scientists flock
Every year, a rather nondescript sheep pasture, tucked away behind a small village on the Welsh border, is transformed into a stage for the latest in scientific thinking.
The Hay Festival was conceived as a showcase for the literary world, but as scientists are often authors too, over the years many of the most popular and exciting events cover neuroscience, astrophysics and climate change. For that reason, we like to preview the event on Science Caf茅.
So this week Adam talks to Prof Daniel Davies about the revolutionary new science of the immune system. The author of聽 The Beautiful Cure: Harnessing Your Body's Natural Defences, is delivering the John Maddox lecture at Hay Festival this year.
Adam also聽explores the importance of voice with acoustic engineer Prof Trevor Cox,聽author of Now Your Talking: Human Conversation聽From Neanderthals to Artificial Intelligence. And he chats to Dame Ottoline Leyser, Professor of Plant Development at the Sainsburys聽Laboratory in Cambridge, who is at the festival to explain聽how plants聽decide聽what to do and how to grow. And very clever it is too!
The festival has always encouraged new ways to deliver science and this year sees the lauch of their TransMISSION projects. In partnership with the National Environmental Research Council, the scheme pairs a leading scientists with an artist, to create a new work. We hear how it worked for climate scientist Dr Emily Shuckburgh and award winning illustrator and author Chris Haughton.聽聽
