Sixty years ago the iconic Russian probe, Sputnik was launched from southern Kazakhstan. It may have just looked like a silver basketball with a couple spikes attached, but this was the worlds first artificial satellite and it marked a shift in space science and radio technology.
To mark Sputnik's birthday and impact, on this week's Science Caf茅 Adam talks to a couple of home-grown space scientists; Dr Chris Arridge of Lancaster University and Dr Geraint Jones from Mullard Space Science Laboratory, about the聽journey from a simple probe to the International Space Station.
We will also be looking at the UK space industry, which is one of the fastest growing in the world and is mainly driven by聽commercial interests. Adam speaks to the managing director of the UK based Starchaser Industries, Steve Bennett, about the successful launch of the research rocket Skybolt 2 and the possibilities of commercial space flight.
