Catherine Winkworth
In the third in our week-long series of programmes on famous hymn writers, today's Daily Service comes from St Martin-in-the-Fields in London's Trafalgar Square and explores the life and work of Catherine Winkworth. Born in London in 1827, she spent most of her life in Manchester. She is best known for bringing the German chorale tradition to England through her numerous translations of church hymns. She was also involved in promoting women's rights, and was a leading proponent of higher education for women. The service is led by the Revd Dr Sam Wells and music is provided by St Martin's Voices, directed by Andrew Earis with organist Jeremy Cole.
Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the King of creation (Lobe den Herrn)
Lift up your heads, eternal gates (Winkworth, adapted John Bell)
Now thank we all our God (Nun Danket).
