A' Suathadh Ri Iomadh Rubha

Documentary looking at the lives and work of the Campbell family of Ness, Isle of Lewis, in writing, performance and music.

Nuair a chaochail Tormod Caimbeul (Tormod a' Bhocsair) ann an 2015, bha e air iomadach nobhail agus leabhar chloinne fhoillseachadh sa Ghàidhlig. Bha meas ga dheanamh air mar ùghdar cho cudtromach sa bh'anns a' chànan, san 20mh linn. Cha b'e ceannachd a rinn è ...

Bha athair Thormoid, Aonghas Caimbeul (Am Bocsair) na shàr bhàrd, ged a chaochail e glè òg. Agus b'e bhràthair-san, air an robh Aonghas cuideachd, a sgrìobh a cheud leabhar fèin-eachdraidh sa Gàidhlig. Thug Suathadh Ri Iomadh Rubha luaidh air sgìre Nis ann an Eilean Leòdhais, agus air a' choimhearsnachd àraid bha tàmh ann.

An seo, coinnichidh sinn ri na Caimbeulaich tro trì ghinealach, a' cluinntinn mu'n obair sgrìobhaidh as an robh Am Bocsair agus Am Puilean an sàs - agus mu'n dòigh as am bheil na sgilean cruthachail aca tighinn beo fhathast tro chlann Thormoid fhèin.

'Bha an còmhnaidh stòraidhean a' dol,' tha Seòras Caimbeul, am mac is sine aig Tormod, ag ìnnse dhuinn. Coltach ri bhràthair Dòmhnall Alasdair, tha Seòras ceòlmhor agus gu mòr an sàs ann an còmhlain ciùil is clàradh. Tha am piuthair, Catriona Lexy, aithnichte na sgrìobhaiche ì fhein, agus ì air leabhraichean fhoillseachadh airson clann is inbhich òga, a bharrachd air a bhith na cleasaiche agus sgrìobhaiche theatar. Tha am mathair, Màiri Sìne Chaimbeul, cuideachd air cliù a chosnadh na seinneadair. Tha cothrom coinneachadh ris an teaghlach, agus sùil as ùr a thoirt air an eachdraidh shònraichte aca, an còmhnaidh a' tilleadh gu cladaichean Nis agus am baile as an d'fhuair iad àrach - Dail bho Dheas. Aig an aon àm tha luaidh ga thoirt air Tormod a' Bhocsair fhèin, agus an dìleab iongantach a dh'fhàg e ann an saoghal litreachais Gàidhlig.

On his death in 2015, Norman Campbell had written and published many novels and children's books in Gaelic. He remains one of the 20th century's most respected Gaelic writers. In this programme we learn not just of his own work but that of his father and uncle - and of the achievements of his children in the arts today.

Norman's father Angus Campbell was a prolific poet. His brother, also Angus, wrote what is considered to be Gaelic's first published autobiography. A' Suathadh Ri Iomadh Rubha painted a vivid picture of the parish of Ness, Isle of Lewis - especially its people. Two generations on, Norman Campbell's children continue to carve out careers in literature, music and performance. We meet them at work and take them back to their beloved Ness to reflect on the creative skills they have inherited.
