Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

I鈥檝e just read the memoir of Wyclef Jean, 鈥渙ne of the most influential voices in hip hop,鈥 or at least that what the publisher鈥檚 blurb says. A friend gave me the book for my birthday because Wyclef Jean is Haitian and I鈥檝e spent most of my life fighting the cause of Haiti, telling the world about its amazing people, as well as worrying away at its seemingly never-ending problems.

Wyclef Jean grew up in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in New York. He was streetwise as soon as he could walk. His dad was a pastor. So the youngster went to church services and got to know his Bible really well. He loved his dad but his dad hated his flirtation with this kind of music. For him it was satanic. He never guessed the extent to which the religion he鈥檇 given to his son kept showing through the music that he made. With his group The Fugees, Wyclef produced a startlingly successful album called The Score. One of the tracks carries these lines:聽

I woke up this morning, I was feeling kinda high; It was me, Jesus Christ and Haile Selassie. Selassie said greetings in the name of the most high, Jah Rastafari. Christ took a sip of the Amaretto, passed it down the table, said today I鈥檒l be betrayed by one of you twelve disciples. Give me a clue who could do this to you? The kid on the block who makes less money than you.

I really appreciate the way Wyclef Jean makes such an effort to keep his two worlds together. We鈥檙e in Holy Week, the week running up to Easter when Christians focus on the suffering and death of Jesus. And here鈥檚 a song that refers to the story of the way Judas Iscariot betrayed his best friend Jesus. The terrible thing is, the love of money can still drive people to do bad things now just as it did then. I like the way Haile Selassie makes his appearance but I鈥檓 still scratching my head about the Amoretto. So Wyclef鈥檚 dad didn鈥檛 live in a different world from his son after all. Both of them knew it was only love that can overcome human wickedness and they said so in their different ways.
