Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

In the Jesuit Hostel in Leeson Street, Dublin, a painting hung above the mantelpiece in the dining room. It depicted the arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. When they were decorating the room somebody with a keen eye suggested that it looked a special painting and should be properly valued. After many experts were consulted, it turned out the painting was a rare work by the great Italian artist, Caravaggio. The Taking of Christ was restored and it now hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland and is one of their greatest treasures.

For all those years when it hung in the dining room it was always a treasure, but nobody knew it. It went unrecognised. It hung there waiting to be discovered. Now everyone wonders how such a work of art was ignored for so long.

There鈥檚 a helpful passage in St Paul鈥檚 Letter to the Ephesians which says: 鈥榃e are God鈥檚 work of art created in Christ to live the good life鈥 (Eph 2鈥10).

I don鈥檛 know about you but I don鈥檛 normally think of myself as a work of art. I鈥檓 still hanging around waiting to be 鈥減roperly valued.鈥

It is encouraging that God regards each of us a work of art. He told us through the prophet Isaiah: 鈥榊ou are precious in my sight and I love you.鈥

There are a few people I know whom I regard as works of art and I treasure them for it. Others like myself are works in progress.聽 St Paul says that鈥檚 okay too: 鈥榊ou are a work of art, not for anything you have done but simply because God made us in God鈥檚 own image.鈥 I am a genuine work of art whether I know it or not. And so are you.

As we learn in this Holy Week, we鈥檙e so precious that Jesus died to save us.聽 Today go to a mirror, look at yourself, wink and say: 鈥榊ou really are a beautiful work of art.鈥 If you do it often enough you might one day believe it.
