Pause For Thought
From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
In many ways January 1st seems an odd day to choose as the beginning of each year. A better choice, for example, might be March 1st when spring is in the air and new life begins to emerge after the gloom of winter. Of course the month of January gets its name from the Roman god, Janus, who was the god of doorways and beginnings. He was often depicted with two faces, one looking back to the past and the other looking forward into the future. With this in mind January 1st may well be the obvious day to start each year because it suggests the possibility of a threshold, a doorway from what鈥檚 gone before into the future that is yet to unfold. For me, among all the many good experiences, 2015 has included a brush with cancer and major bereavement alongside other more minor painful losses and difficult lessons. Rationally, there鈥檚 no reason why the days and months of this new year will be any better than those of the last 12 months, but making an end point to the year helps me to draw a psychological line in the sands of time, and to feel the future can be different. It offers my imagination the possibility of a new beginning and new beginnings invite me to put down the burden of past struggles so I鈥檓 free to embrace or create positive changes in my life. I love the work of the poet, T. S. Eliot. In 鈥楲ittle Gidding鈥, the last of his Four Quartets, Eliot writes, 鈥楩or last year鈥檚 words belong to last year鈥檚 language / And next year鈥檚 words await another voice.鈥 This time last year my voice was badly affected by the lump growing in my throat, but following surgery and speech therapy, my voice has been restored. As 2016 begins, I鈥檓 ready to sing a new song, and I intend to make it one where love and compassion are the major themes that run through it. Happy New Year!
