Pause For Thought
From Rev’d Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:
It is the 205th anniversary of the infamous Berners St Hoax. On November 27th 1810, a man called Theodore Hook bet his friend Samuel Beazley that he could in one week turn a completely insignificant house in Soho into the most visited address in London – and so the Groucho Club was born (not really).
Theodore Hook sent out invitations purporting to be from Mrs Tottenham of 54
Berners St to tradesmen, manufacturers, members of the professions, the great
and the good; and as the morning of the 27th November dawned Hook and Beazley
sat in the window of the house opposite to observe a chimney sweep arrive, who
was sent away by Mrs Tottenham’s maid. Then another arrived and another and
another; in all twelve chimney sweeps came to call at number 54, followed by a
succession of coalmen, then cakemakers with wedding cakes, then priests, doctors,
lawyers, shoemakers, fishmongers, a dozen pianos, the Duke of York, the
Governor of the Bank of England, and the Archbishop of Canterbury – in the end
such a huge crowd turned up that London came to a standstill. Hook won his bet
but had to go into hiding because he had annoyed so many people (occupational
hazard for practical jokers).
Annoying, but who wouldn’t enjoy such a spectacle (and I dare say Mel and David
are thinking of the TV format as I speak)?
The hacker’s organization, Anonymous, definitely would. Last week they did
something similar to ISIS, by hacking into its social media accounts and
redirecting all enquiries from potential jihadists to a video of Rick Astley.
To some that looks facetious, responding to murderous rage with a digital
raspberry, but I don’t think so.
Tomorrow the Church’s season of Advent begins, and the Prophet Isaiah takes centre stage. He foresaw the coming of the Prince of Peace, or so we believe; and said on that day we will take our swords and turn them into ploughs, and the wolf will lie down with the lamb.
Turning violence into peace seems a very remote prospect at the moment, but maybe we can anticipate it a little by responding to rage not with more rage, but with Rick.
