Pause For Thought

Abdul-Rehman Malik, journalist and broadcaster

Chris, when I got married I was confronted with a very difficult choice. I had to make a decision that would reflect both on my character and the way my in-laws would see me for years to come. I had to choose a nickname.

Let me explain. My wife 鈥 born in London, bred in Singapore 鈥 has roots in Bangladesh where it is common for people to have a 鈥減roper鈥 name for listing on passports and other official documents, and some kind of pet name. In her family there is a Nancy, a Mary, a few Daisies and at least one Tito. It was only right and proper that I had one too.

At my wedding reception, it was decided that my closest friends would make the final decision. After some transatlantic consultation, a name was chosen. I would be heretofore known as Humphrey, after Humphrey Bogart, of course. It was perfect.

I confess that I have a thing for Bogie.听 Call it a man-crush if you will. Saturday nights when I was growing up were reserved for curling on the couch with classic cinema. And it was Bogart that I looked forward to. His characters were the perfect cocktail of grit and cunning. Bogie鈥檚 acting surged with an intensity that sometimes bordered on feverish. I wish I could match his sense of style.

73 years ago today, audiences saw the film Casablanca for the first time. It was Bogie鈥檚 most iconic turn. A man running away from his past in a godforsaken desert town during the middle of a world war ends up running straight into his worst fears and his deepest loves. It is, of course, the stuff of legend.听

鈥淲ear gratitude like a cloak,鈥 said the mystic Rumi, 鈥渁nd it will feed every corner of your life.鈥

As my American friends celebrate Thanksgiving today, I want to join them in giving thanks for the storytellers 鈥 people who, through their words or performance, are able to shed light on our humanity and reveal some secret of our souls. Bogie did that.

Sadly, my new nickname hasn鈥檛 really stuck. I sometimes wish it had. 鈥淎cting is experience,鈥 Bogart said, 鈥渨ith something sweet behind it.鈥 It is this sweetness 鈥 the syrup of life 鈥 that keeps me coming back. If I may, here鈥檚 looking at you, Humphrey.
