My car went in for its MOT a couple of days ago. 聽It鈥檚 not particularly old, but it鈥檚 getting to the stage where you dread the phone call on MOT day, just in case the news is expensive. 聽Luckily all was ok, and my car lives to drive another day.

I鈥檝e been a driver for a long time now, and despite the potential for financial pain, I really enjoy getting out in my car. I鈥檝e read somewhere that the vehicle we drive, as well as the way we drive it, can say a lot about us. In fact, it鈥檚 been suggested that even the colour of our car gives us away. 聽Apparently if you drive a black car you want to stamp your authority on other road users, a red one suggests you鈥檙e a little wild, and a blue car is often chosen by people who are serene and peaceful. I was quite pleased to read that silver cars suggest a cool, calm, James Bond type 鈥� oh yes! Funnily enough I couldn鈥檛 find any mention of brown, which I think Vassos is quite keen on!

It鈥檚 all a bit silly of course, but I do think it鈥檚 a good idea to check from time to time how we are presenting ourselves to the world, car driver or not 鈥� a bit like a 鈥榩ersonality MOT鈥�. 聽In the religious world we often talk about an outer sign of an inner reality 鈥� something we do, maybe a ritual or a ceremony, symbolizing the deeper stuff that鈥檚 going on inside us. In our everyday life, the way we act outwardly communicates to the world what kind of person we are on the inside, often without us even realising it.

One of the early writings of the Christian church, the epistle of James, tells us that 鈥榝aith without works is dead鈥� 鈥� we can be as religious as we like, or in a modern context, we can talk the talk as much as we like, but if we don鈥檛 show it in our actions, it鈥檚 pointless. What we do shows who we are.

Well our intrepid drivers this morning are certainly showing all the outer signs of excitement, as well as a desire to really help those who need it the most by their winning bids for Children in Need. That鈥檚 who they are, and it鈥檚 a pretty fantastic inner motivation. 聽So I wish them all good luck, a wonderful journey whatever the colour of the car they get, and I鈥檓 only a teeny bit envious!
