We have a little caf茅 at our church and sometimes we have events there like a quiz night or what we call 鈥楳e and My Music鈥� which is a bit like Desert Island Discs but with food and an audience - much better! 鈥� and I was recently asked to share my favourite tracks over lasagne and apricot sponge.

My biggest problem was choosing the music. Best rock record ever? No contest! 鈥� 鈥楲et鈥檚 Spend the Night Together鈥�, of course; or the tune from my youth 鈥� 鈥楳onday, Monday鈥�; I had to pick an 鈥榦ur tune鈥� to celebrate Christopher and me so Elton John鈥檚 鈥業 guess that鈥檚 why they call it the blues鈥� came top out of a number of possibilities and then, because it was church, I thought I鈥檇 better have something a bit religious so Bach鈥檚 St Matthew Passion, the last chorale, was beautiful and just right.

But then, since musicals have always been very important in my life, there just had to be a film track 鈥� but which one? For my money, you can鈥檛 beat West Side Story with Leonard Bernstein鈥檚 fabulous score and Stephen Sondheim鈥檚 lyrics 鈥� I could watch it every day. I鈥檓 instantly transported back to the excitement and turmoil and fervour of those teenage years聽 when Tony sings 鈥楽omething鈥檚 Coming鈥� and how powerfully songs like 鈥楾onight鈥� or 鈥楳aria鈥� can recall the white hot passion of first love. We might laugh at 鈥楪ee Officer Krupke鈥� but really it鈥檚 a music hall tune with very wise and witty words 鈥� and I can鈥檛 keep still when they sing 鈥業鈥檇 like to be in America鈥�?

Leonard Bernstein, who was born this day in 1918, said that music names the unnameable and communicates the unknowable and I think that, in hearing my favourites, my supper companions found out more about me than they would hearing several of my sermons. And I think too that鈥檚 why music is used in Christian worship 鈥� there is much that is unnamed and unknown and so we find out more about God through the Heavenly gift of music.

Pop or plainsong, they鈥檙e all songs of praise to me.
