Well I did it Chris, remember a few weeks ago just before I ventured off on my holidays you challenged me to two weeks free of social media, text and email? Well I smashed it and not just me but my kids too. Now it鈥檚 one thing for this middle aged vicar to go cold turkey on technology it鈥檚 an entirely different thing for my teenager and nearly teenager to abstain from wifi for 14 days, but they did, I鈥檓 so proud!

They did get a small technology fix watching the best Greek satellite telly had to offer. I heard them one morning as they flicked through the channels screaming with laughter. 鈥楲ook Mum! Magic shoes!鈥� it was one of those adverts selling products you never knew you needed. We couldn鈥檛 understand all the details but there seemed to be a mature man in a lab coat offering a pair of cheap looking trainers that promised not only to make you taller but also 3 stone lighter, all yours for thirty euros. Over the course of the week the kids became fans of not only the magic shoe adverts but also the magic comb (stops you going bald), magic hairbands (instant facelift) and magic pants (say goodbye to that muffin top). They could see the ads were ridiculous and not once were they taken in by these products that offered to help you paper over the cracks and pretend to be something you most definitely are not.

It seems we are often better at doing just that and pretending to be something we are not rather than saying what we are. Identity is so important, we first of course, have to find out who we are, and work on improving our flaws but it鈥檚 important I think to be ourselves, the good, the bad and he ugly. All any of us want from anyone else, regardless of whether it鈥檚 our politicians, our postman or our priest, is authenticity. To be real, to be genuine, to be honest and open. In John鈥檚 gospel Jesus uses 7 sayings starting with the words 鈥業 am..鈥� and going on to describe who he is, what he鈥檚 like, his identity. As the saying goes 鈥楤e yourself, everyone else is already taken.鈥� Authenticity is unmistakeable.

We also popped into the shops while we were away, the latest headphones, designer shoes and expensive labels on display I asked the kids if they were interested, the teenager took a close look at a pair of swanky baseball boots, 鈥楴ah you鈥檙e alright mum, they鈥檙e fake and I鈥檇 rather have the real thing.鈥� Wise child that one.
