A law was recently passed in California that allows people to delete permanently the embarrassing texts and photos made public on social media before they were 18; that way, prospective employers or universities won鈥檛 see those mistakes. Thank God no records exist of the time I went blonde; I would only have been eligible for one profession 鈥� and I鈥檓 not talking priesthood here.聽

Possibly my worst mistake as a priest was when I forgot a funeral I was supposed to be conducting!! It was terrible 鈥� I鈥檇 been at a meeting earlier in the afternoon when a man was taken ill and what with calling 999 and getting him into the recovery position and the general panic, it wasn鈥檛 til everyone had gone that I noticed my cassock hanging on the door鈥︹� shall never forget the mad dash to the Crem but I was too late and a colleague had stood in for me. The memory haunts me and I鈥檝e never missed a funeral since!

But of course, I make other mistakes every day; arriving late at a conference last year I went through the wrong door and found myself on stage with the Archbishop of Central Africa and some people singing! 聽And my daughter regularly reminds me of the time I put the boys carefully in the car then drove away 鈥� leaving her, age 7, standing in the car park!

But, on the other hand, a professor at King鈥檚 College in London has said that we should not be encouraged to delete our mistakes; he wants to ban all those smelly rubber erasers we loved so much so that our errors still show 鈥� then, he says, we can learn from them.

What to do with mistakes?聽 We might delete them or rub them out - but we know they were there. As a Christian, I believe that it鈥檚 important to confront our mistakes realistically, to try to see why we went wrong, see if we can put it right, then move on and resolve to make better mistakes next time; and I reckon just doing that is enough to make God and the angels whoop with joy!聽聽
