Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Today is the 90th birthday of Mikis Theodorakis 鈥 a man widely recognised as the very embodiment of the spirit of Greece. On a world stage, he鈥檚 spent his life campaigning against war and fighting for freedom and human rights. At home, in Greece, he鈥檚 been a determined opponent of tyranny and has even suffered imprisonment and exile for his pains. Five years ago, already 85 years old, he organised a protest movement against accepting the crippling conditions of a loan from the IMF. He鈥檚 a musician of rare ability but best known, I suppose, for the music he wrote for the film, Zorba the Greek, and the hilarious traditional dance by Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates with which the film ends. The Greek nation has had such a battering in recent times. If ever it needed a champion it鈥檚 now. And who better than Mikis Theodorakis.听

Where would Europe be without Greece? The worlds of philosophy and political theory owe a huge amount to its thinkers. So too does Christianity. Saint Paul found some awkward customers in Corinth but he still managed to spell out his core message of faith, hope and (supremely) love; he debated seriously with a range of philosophers in Athens and got them talking about the resurrection. At Philippi, he described a God who didn鈥檛 impose himself on people but who chose to reveal his power through a ministry of service and at Thessalonika he found great souls ready to work for the betterment of their contemporaries.

Greece is in a mess, we all know that; but Europe without Greece would be a travesty and most of us know that too. Mikis Theodorakis, a man who鈥檚 spent his entire life trying to lift the spirits of his fellow Greeks and inspire them to build a more humane world, is 90 today. We can only wish him and his people well.
