Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Well Chris, last time I saw you I was just about to head off to my son’s wedding in California. Now I don’t know exactly how my son and new daughter-in-law met, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t anything to do with a moment in the Jewish calendar that occurs later this week. For reasons that aren’t properly explained anywhere in Jewish sources, the full moon of this particular month was an occasion when unmarried girls would put on white dresses and dance in the vineyards. Apparently this annual summer ritual was an attempt to find husbands, and although it’s a little known Jewish celebration, its main theme is romantic love.

Several centuries after this Jewish equivalent of Valentine’s Day was established came a tragedy when the Babylonians destroyed Temple in Jerusalem and took many of its citizens into exile. The anniversary of that event was just a few days ago, and was commemorated with a fast.

So for Jews, this week offers an improbable combination of events: violence, destruction and exile preceded half a century earlier by a kind of biblical version of speed dating. Maybe that's what inspired the prophet Jeremiah, who witnessed the destruction, to write a letter to the people of Jerusalem who were exiled by the rivers of Babylon. Instead of weeping, he told them, they should find husbands and wives for their children so they could build new lives there.

Jewish tradition sees the weeks following the anniversary of the Temple's destruction as a period of consolation, when specific readings are included in synagogue services, beginning this coming Sabbath with Isaiah’s words 'Nachamu, nachamu ami' – 'be comforted, my people'.

After a time of grief, we need comfort. For many, comfort comes from the opportunity to be consoled by others who care for us - and for whom we care whether we marry them or not. Caring and being cared for of course increases the possibility of further grief should we ever lose that care. But without it, I believe, our humanity is diminished. Perhaps the contrast in this week’s Jewish observances remind us that the tragedies and the joys we experience in our lives can help us to cherish the value of human companionship and compassion.
