From the Symphony Hall in Birmingham the CBSO under its principal conductor Andris Nelsons with Tango, an evocative reflection on the Latin dance by his fellow Latvian compatriot Arturs Maskats, followed by Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 with German virtuoso Lars Vogt. To end this concert a masterpiece Rachmaninov wrote at the end of his life while in exile in America, the Symphonic Dances -still a European sound world but very much spiked with jazz-like rhythms.

Followed by a focus this week on composers as performers of their own pieces. Today we feature, among other things, one of the most remarkable pianists of all time, Sergei Rachmaninov, recorded recently using the latest technology in the reproduction of piano rolls.
