London Symphony Orchestra/Gergiev

With Martin Handley. As part of their Emigre: The Rite of Spring season, the LSO under Valery Gergiev perform Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle.

Presented by Martin Handley.

As part of their Emigre - The Rite of Spring season, the London Symphony Orchestra, under their chief conductor Valery Gergiev, perform two early 20th century classics. Stravinsky's seminal The Rite of Spring, written for Nijinsky's ballet, centres on a prehistoric community which selects a young virgin for ecstatic human sacrifice.

Less feted than Stavinsky's work, Bartok's opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle is loosely based on a folk tale. Bluebeard's new wife Judith insists on opening the locked doors inside his castle, and in doing so she reveals the ugly world of his past which she should have best left undiscovered.
