have headlined Reading + Leeds before, almost did in 2010, and were top of the bill at Glastonbury in 2013. Time for some new blood? Judging by this weekend, plenty of bands are ready. Here's a look at the contenders...

Second on the bill to Metallica this year and they certainly didn't bottle it - they slayed. Plus they're a classic Reading + Leeds band and they're British - they wouldn't be a controversial choice.

By the end of the week, Oxford's finest could have their first No.1 album and they're no strangers to headlining big festivals, having topped the Latitude bill in 2013. Their set this year was a secret/unofficial. Does that mean they're very much available next year?

Like Foals, they're a former Latitude headliner and, playing second fiddle to Mumfords this year, they proved they know how to project their subtle music to huge crowds. Expect them to record their third album in 2016 - and be ready for top billing in 2017.

NME have already to headline in 2016 after their ferociously brilliant set this year. They've certainly got the confidence, but, with just one album to their name so far, do they have the material? We'll back them for 2017 after they've recorded a follow-up.

You can bet your life that Reading + Leeds promoter Melvin Benn crunches numbers when he's thinking of who to headline, and Bastille's numbers are vast - over 5m record sales so far, half of which are in the UK. And they've only released one album. Assuming its follow-up is as successful, they're good shout for a future headliner.

They've been a buzz band ever since they released their debut EP, Blush, in 2013, but 2015 is turning out to be their year. Why now? Having an album out at last has helped, plus they just get better and better. The London four-piece are still very much on the rise, so they'll need time to climb bills, but climb they will.

Like Wolf Alice, they need time, but the Yorkshire alt-rockers' main stage set has got people talking. They pulled a huge crowd at both Reading and Leeds, despite performing early, and they already know how to play to even bigger audiences - earlier this year, they supported .
