"Danny and Fiona are closer than ever"

Tracy Ann Oberman returns to New Tricks as a series regular. She plays Forensic Anthropologist Fiona Kennedy.

We first met last series and she had quite an effect on – where do we find them at the beginning of series 12?

I love Fiona – she’s smart, independent and knows exactly what she wants
Tracy Ann Oberman describing her character

Danny and Fiona are closer than ever this series. They’ve stepped their relationship up a notch and there are some lovely moments where we find them flirting in cafes and reaffirming their commitment to one another - not to mention a disastrous dinner party where she introduces him to her parents. Danny’s ex-wife has been sectioned and is living nearby but Fiona is supportive. Danny had a heavy shadow hanging over him from his last relationship and his daughter’s happiness means the world to him, so it’s nice that Holly, in turn, has accepted Fiona as a positive influence on her dad – he’s the happiest and most relaxed she’s seen him in years.

What are your thoughts on Fiona as a character and why did you take the role?

I love Fiona – she’s smart, independent and knows exactly what she wants. She has a terrific wit and is prone to some ditsy moments at times - nothing like the serious forensic pathologists they usually come across - and they love having her around. I think she’s also a bit of a welcome anchor for in this sea of men. I’m very close to Tamzin in real life so it was a treat to come in to work with her each day.

We find out a little bit more about Fiona this series, which includes meeting her family. How do they react to Danny?

Danny is incredibly nervous about the dinner – and rightly so – as Fiona’s parents have refused to accept that her marriage to Crispin is over. They’ve put him on such a high pedestal that Danny has no hope of trying to impress them. I don’t want to reveal what the outcome is as it’s such a funny episode, but Fiona’s parents continue to waft on about what a fine citizen Crispin is and needless to say, Danny’s not one for biting his tongue!

What was it like working with Nicholas Lyndhurst and the rest of the cast?

It’s been great working with television heavy weights like and – I can see why they’ve been on screen for all these years as they’re so talented. I grew up watching them on TV and following their careers so it was excellent to be able to finally get the chance to work alongside them.

Have you enjoyed working on ?

Absolutely – it’s a gorgeous cast, we’re all friends and really enjoy working with one another. I see a lot of Tamzin and Denis in real life as we live around the corner from one another, so it’s been lovely to go into work with my friends. There’s a lot of dark subject matter in the show itself, so the fact that we all get on and there’s so much humour on and off set is wonderful. It’s a dream job – I’ve had so much fun working on it.
