Radio 1 Teen Hero - Lewis

In spite of his serious health problems, Lewis has done a huge amount of work to help poorly and disabled young people.

Lewis is the most inspiring, selfless, hardworking committed and wonderful young man you could ever hope to meet.
Emma, Lewis' Mum

Lewis has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, hydrocephalus and epilepsy. He has had 13 brain surgeries since he was 17 months old, and he spends a lot of his life in hospital.

Despite this he is dedicated to helping others. Lewis' passion for helping children, like himself, make friends drove him to create . The website and events help over 200 poorly and disabled children that miss a lot of school to come together and make friends, so that they are not alone.

He realised that some children coming to Friend Finder had trouble reading and writing and found it hard to exchange details, so he found little devices called Pokens (USBs with hands) that use near-field communication to allow them to swap information with a simple touch. When two children meet and touch their gadget hands together they light up and exchange details, so all children can feel included and stay in contact with their new friends.

Through his hard work and determination, Lewis has inspired many other young people to volunteer and help at Friend Finder. He’s received numerous letters from children helped by Friend Finder, saying thank you, as well as letters from their parents saying what a difference he has made not just to their children’s lives, but to their lives too.

He dedicates all his free time to Friend Finder, organising and planning events and helping other children, regardless of the fact that he faces daily seizures, constant pain and further brain surgery.

His aim is to ensure everyone leaves his Friend Finder events with a friend.

Carys

Carys' two younger sisters, Isabelle and Siena, have an undiagnosed condition which has left them with severe learning difficulties, severe epilepsy and visual impairment. From a very young age Carys and her older sister, Lauren, have put their needs before her own.

Both of the sisters need lots of care and attention. Carys helps make sure their needs are met, and that they are able to get out and about to enjoy their lives as much as possible.

This year Siena has been in hospital for 5 months, having become seriously ill. With their mum spending much of her time at the hospital and Lauren studying hard for her GCSEs, Carys has taken on the responsibility of looking after the family. As well as taking care of day-to-day tasks such as cooking and washing, she has been almost solely responsible for looking after Isabelle.

Recently, Carys has helped raise money for the specialist equipment her sisters need by taking part in a 5k run, and is a weekly volunteer at a local charity shop.
