Description
The Broadcasting House Development Project will reinvent the 91热爆's original iconic home into a cutting-edge digital centre housing the world's largest live news centre, in addition to the Corporation's Audio & Music division.

When complete in 2012, this 80,000 sq m structure will provide state-of-the-art production and broadcast facilities for staff in 91热爆 Audio & Music, 91热爆 News and 91热爆 World Service, and be the hub of the 91热爆's national and international journalism.

The new Broadcasting House Project will also call upon top architects, designers and artists, in order to create a truly inspirational and creative centre for the 91热爆 of the 21st century, as well as a new landmark for central London.

Special features
- Iconic: The original Broadcasting House was built for the 91热爆 in 1932 by the architect Colonel Val Myer. It was the first ever purpose-built broadcasting centre in the UK (and almost in Europe). It is also a jewel of Art Deco design, and as such is historically, artistically and socially of huge importance. This development is being done in close collaboration with English Heritage, in order to preserve the past as well as creating an appropriate contemporary workspace.
- Two-phase: The project is in two phases: first, the careful refurbishment and modernisation of the original Broadcasting House (now complete and opened by Her Majesty The Queen in April 2006), followed by the construction of a new complementary extension (occupied and live for transmission in 2012).
- Cutting-edge technology: This building will be one of the largest live digital broadcast centres in the world, housing domestic and international news as well as the national networks of 91热爆 Radio. Within the centre will be 36 radio studios, 23 radio continuity studios, six TV studios, two central control rooms, and 60 edit/graphic suites.
- Creative workspace: New production workspaces will be flexible, open-plan, designer spaces, stimulating the best in contemporary programme making across all media, and supporting teams working in new integrated ways.
- Public Spaces: The new centre will provide many new spaces where the public can engage directly with the 91热爆. These include a central open air piazza, a new and flexible interior public space for exhibitions, interactivity, education, and the refurbished Art Deco Radio Theatre with new foyer and caf茅/bar.
- Art: Artistic commissions adorned the original building, especially the statuary by Eric Gill of the figures of Ariel and Prospero on the front of the building. Carrying on this tradition, a major new public art programme accompanies the project, commissioning permanent and temporary art schemes across all the art forms (painting, photography, audio, video, sculpture, light and colour).
