You're not Nancy! – Ashley's dream is over
Ashley's dream is over as she becomes the seventh contestant to be
eliminated from 91Èȱ¬ One's I'd Do Anything.
Ìý
After a public vote Niamh and Ashley were the least popular
Nancys and Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Niamh.
Ìý
Ashley
is the seventh Nancy to leave the competition.
Ìý
In Saturday's live show, all six remaining Nancy finalists
performed to songs chosen to display various traits that are
attributed to the character of Nancy, to show viewers that they
have the skill and sheer charisma to carry one of the most
challenging roles in musical theatre.
Ìý
After performing their songs and receiving feedback from Andrew
Lloyd Webber and the expert panel of John Barrowman, Denise Van
Outen and Barry Humphries, the Nancys faced a nervous wait for
viewers to cast their votes.
Ìý
On Ashley's performance, Denise said: "There was a little bit of
softness there and I liked your vocal, I thought that was lovely, I
just felt that your performance we've taken a step back – it was
very cruise ship and there was a lot of head wobbling and finger
pointing and it felt like watching a character out of Abigail's
Party – it wasn't pleasant to watch. It was over the top and came
across as very cheesy and that's not real acting."
Ìý
Barry said: "You are indestructible, Ashley, aren't you. I really
warmed to you over this whole series but I did feel the
performance was very casual. You seemed to loiter in front of the
audience. For me I don't think you achieved what you wanted to
achieve tonight."
Ìý
John said: "For me it was strong vocal but for the first time I
actually see what Barry's been talking about. It was that kind of
stuff that got me. It was a little cheesy for me. If you're back
next week Ashley bring it back less. Less is more."
Ìý
Niamh and Ashley gained the least amount of votes, and had to
sing a rendition of one of Andrew's own songs, Don't Cry For Me
Argentina from Evita in order to survive.
Ìý
Then it was up to Andrew Lloyd Webber alone to choose which Nancy
should be saved for another week.
Ìý
Andrew said: "I'm going to save Niamh. Ashley you were slightly
out of tune tonight and I know you were nervous. However I do
want to say that you are a fantastic talent but you don't
communicate it on stage.
Ìý
"I would love to work with you one day. I know you're a drama
teacher and your students should be very proud."
Ìý
After hearing the announcement Ashley said: "This experience has had
its ups and downs but overall it's been great. It's built my
character and I look forward to the new things that come along.
Ìý
"One thing I do want to say is that I didn't lose my identity
throughout the whole thing. I still stayed me, kept professional
and I did the best job I could which is good enough for me!"
Ìý
Safe for another week were Samantha, Jessie, Jodie, Rachel and
Niamh.
Ìý
The remaining hopefuls will go on to next week's show where they
will again perform for the nation who will decide who should be
Nancy in the new Cameron Mackintosh West End production of
Oliver!
