You're not Nancy! – Sarah's dream is over
Sarah's dream is over as she becomes the sixth contestant to be
eliminated from 91Èȱ¬ One's I'd Do Anything.
Ìý
After a public vote Rachel and Sarah were the least popular
Nancys and Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to save Rachel. So Sarah
is the sixth Nancy to leave the competition.
Ìý
In Saturday's live show, all seven remaining Nancy finalists
performed solo renditions of big band numbers chosen to show
viewers that they have the skill and sheer charisma to carry one
of the most challenging roles in musical theatre.
Ìý
After performing their songs and receiving feedback from Andrew
Lloyd Webber and the expert panel of John Barrowman, Denise Van
Outen and Barry Humphries, the Nancys faced a nervous wait for
viewers to cast their votes.
Ìý
On Sarah's performance, Denise said: "You've proved yourself to
me as a wonderful singer, as a wonderful actress. I think that
you are very special, you have some magical quality when you
perform, you really connect with the audience and you make
everything very believable. Just be careful that you don't over
pronounce your words because sometimes it makes you sound more
Mary Poppins than Nancy."
Ìý
Barry said: "I just feel that you still have a limited range of
expressions. You're beautiful on television, in a theatre, in a
big theatre it remains to be seen how well you would register,
but you did give a very good acting performance there I thought."
Ìý
John said: "I don't know what planet Barry's on but the show and
performance I was watching I saw Mr Bojangles. You told that
story, you had multiple expressions on your face and they would be
seen from the back of the stalls no doubt. Great performance."
Ìý
Rachel and Sarah gained the least amount of votes, and had to
sing a rendition of one of Andrew's own songs, As If We Never
Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard, in order to survive.
Ìý
Then it was up to Andrew Lloyd Webber alone to choose which Nancy
should be saved for another week.
Ìý
Andrew said: "I'm really deeply concerned about you girls so I've
been given a real googly again tonight. However thinking about it
long and hard I'm going to save Rachel.
Ìý
"I feel this is my fault because I told you to do Mr Bojangles in
the way you did and I thought you did it wonderfully, however I
have to think as a producer and I do think Rachel was rock solid
and there were moments that I did think that maybe you were a bit
fragile but you were wonderful and you did exactly what I asked
and I feel dreadful."
Ìý
On hearing the announcement Sarah said: "I'm gutted to be out of
the competition. I've had an absolutely amazing time and
wouldn't have changed it for the world."
Ìý
Safe for another week were Ashley, Jessie, Jodie, Rachel,
Samantha and Niamh.
Ìý
The remaining hopefuls will go on to next week's show where they
will again perform for the nation who will decide who should be
Nancy in the new Cameron Mackintosh West End production of
Oliver!
