91Èȱ¬ Midlands Sports Awards Winners 2007


Another successful sporting year was celebrated in style at the 91Èȱ¬ Midlands Sports Awards 2007.

Ìý

Nick Owen presented awards to winners from across the region, including the hotly-contested 91Èȱ¬ Midlands Sports Personality of the Year Award which was won by British Speedway Champion Chris "Bomber" Harris.

Ìý

The Coventry Bees' rider, and British Grand Prix winner, beat the Aston Villa and England footballer Gareth Barry into second place, with Birchfield Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton running a close third.

Ìý

Completing a golden evening for Harris, Coventry Bees collected the Team of the Year Award, recognising their triple-trophy winning season.

Ìý

Consolation came for Barry and Sotherton with Gareth Barry winning the Footballer of the Year Award for the second year running and Kelly Sotherton receiving the Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The event which took place on Sunday (2 December) at the National Motorcycle Museum near Solihull, West Midlands also honoured Frankie Gavin who became the first British boxer to win a World Amateur title by presenting him with the Sportsman of the Year Award.

Ìý

And the 25th Anniversary of Aston Villa's European Cup Triumph was recognised when six of the players were honoured with the Hall of Fame Award.

The Midlands 91Èȱ¬ Sports Hero Award 2007, supported by Robinsons, was awarded to Brian Buck who, for over 50 years, has been the heartbeat of Sandwell Cycle Speedway club.

Ìý

This award honours individuals from the world of grassroots sport who have made a difference to their community, working on a voluntary basis, to prepare facilities, roll the pitch, coach the juniors, run local sports leagues or work behind the scenes so that sport can be played and enjoyed throughout the UK.

Brian Buck will be joining the sporting stars of today in a glittering ceremony for 91Èȱ¬ Sports Personality Of The Year 2007 at Birmingham's NEC on Sunday 9 December, where the overall UK winner will be announced.

91Èȱ¬ Local Radio Breakthrough Award: Michael Kightly (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Chaz Davies (Herefordshire motorcyclist)
