Cal Macaninch plays Radge

Sorted - new drama series for 91Èȱ¬ ONE

Cal Macaninch plays Radge

A true party animal whose life is one long round of pleasure, pints and pulling women, Radge is not exactly the role model his 12-year-old son requires.

Ìý

"On the surface he's having a great time - he's actually doing all those things he brags about," says Cal Macaninch. "But he's really running away from things, from a hurt in his life, and that's one of the reasons why he's become a bad father.

Ìý

"He doesn't mean to be – he thinks he's best mates with his son – but he neglects his responsibilities. He wants to have a great time all the time and forgets that his son needs something else. He's searching for his youth, or something, instead of being a man and looking after his boy."

Ìý

Despite seemingly being only interested in having a good time, Radge does have a more complex side to him, as Cal explains.

Ìý

"He's fearless, he's not afraid of anyone – he's an extraordinary man on that level. And he hates being dominated so he'll strike out to avoid it. He's got a joy about life, a positive energy; he thinks you should enjoy yourself.

Ìý

"Radge also has quite a strong moral code with his mates in terms of honesty, loyalty, those type of things – but he doesn't mind shagging around and drinking and taking drugs, so he obviously has different levels of morality."

Ìý

And his attitude means he attracts complaints from customers who expect certain standards from their postmen – though Cal is quick to defend him. "He cuts corners by doing things like jumping over a fence or two if it gets the round done faster and he can't understand why people get upset."

Ìý

Cal himself knows all about the importance of meeting delivery deadlines.

Ìý

"I did a paper round in Glasgow when I was a kid for about five years," he reveals. "I was up at seven o'clock, seven days a week – people used to set their clocks by my paper round. Me and the postie used to be good mates; so I'm perfect for Radge!"

Ìý

In fact they've turned out to be ideal for each other, as Cal admits.

Ìý

"I've loved playing him, it's been brilliant fun and very liberating. Recently I've been playing a lot of very introspective, tough characters."

Ìý

Those intense roles have included parts in the TV dramas The Ghost Squad and Warriors, 91Èȱ¬ ONE's Murphy's Law, Silent Witness and Waking The Dead and films Rag Tale and Dear Frankie, and playing Ben Craig in the 91Èȱ¬ ONE drama Rockface, about a mountain rescue team.
