Cast of New Street Law

New Street Law - new legal drama for 91Èȱ¬ ONE - starts Monday 4 May, 8.00pm

Introduction

John Hannah, John Thomson and Lisa Faulkner head the cast in New Street Law, a gripping, contemporary legal drama sarting on 91Èȱ¬ ONE on Thursday 4 May at 8.00pm.

Ìý

New Street Law follows the exploits and cases of two rival barristers chambers in the heart of Manchester. The lead writer and co-producer is former criminal barrister Matthew Hall and joint partner in One Eyed Dog Productions with GF Newman.

Ìý

John Hannah stars as Jack Roper, a young barrister from a working class background who turned down a lucrative job offer from his mentor, Laurence Scammel QC (Paul Freeman), Head of Manchester's leading prosecution chambers in favour of his own defence-only chambers.

Ìý

Jack founded his own firm with old friend Al Ware (Chris Gascoyne); lovable chancer Charlie Darling (John Thomson); no-nonsense Annie Quick (Lara Cazalet) and cocky Joe Stevens (Lee Williams).

Ìý

Jack's confidence grows with every case he wins and he rapidly threatens Laurence's firmly established position in the legal community - something that Laurence's ruthlessly ambitious wife, Honor (Penny Downie), is determined to prevent.

Ìý

Lurking in the wings is Laurence's daughter, Laura (Lisa Faulkner), who works for the family chambers. She shares Jack's instinctive passion for justice, but she also poses a threat.

Ìý

Written by Matthew Hall, a 38-year-old former criminal barrister, New Street Law is a populist programme, but has at its heart an ambition to give genuine and thought-provoking insight into the workings of the British legal system.

Ìý

Special guest stars appear throughout the eight weeks including; Nikki Sanderson (episodes 2 and 8), Mark Womack (episode 3), Les Dennis (episode 4), Tony Slattery (episode 5) and Shobna Gulati (episode 7).

Ìý

Made in Manchester by Red Production Company in association with One Eyed Productions.

Ìý

GF Newman, Executive Producer for One Eyed Dog Productions, says: "Sometimes the law is an ass, so too are some of its practitioners; but sometimes they are heroes who help deliver justice."

Ìý

RED Production Company's Nicola Shindler says: "I am very excited to be making this innovative and fresh new drama and delighted with the fantastic cast we've assembled.

Ìý

"We've been able to attract such a great cast because of the complex and interesting characters who inhabit the world of New Street Law.

Ìý

"This is a modern take on the legal drama with challenging weekly legal stories as well as compelling relationship development for our main characters."

Ìý

91Èȱ¬ Executive Producer Julie Gardner adds: "As this smart and clever weekly series progresses the characters' pasts are unearthed through the gripping human interest stories that they deal with and the crises they face.

Ìý

"It is through their professional dilemmas that we will gradually get to know and care about them as people."

Ìý

RED Production Company's Nicola Shindler and One Eyed Dog's GF Newman will executive produce with Julie Gardner for 91Èȱ¬ Wales.

Ìý

Lead writer and partner in One Eyed Dog, Matthew Hall, will co-produce. New Street Law is directed by Julian Holmes and produced by Matthew Bird.
