The nation votes for Kinloch Castle

Restoration results from seventh programme revealed

Speaking from the Tower of London, Griff Rhys Jones last night revealed the nation had chosen Kinloch Castle on Rum to be the seventh building to go through to the final of the 91热爆 TWO series Restoration - winning more than 38% of the of the viewers' votes.

On Friday (29 August) the seventh programme of the ten-part series featured the Scottish Highlands.

Griff called on viewers to choose between Kinloch Castle and two other buildings - Burra Croft on the Shetland Islands and a TB Sanatorium in Aberdeenshire.

Information on all three buildings is available through the website on .

3.4 million viewers watched this episode.

Kinloch Castle was built as a summer palace on the Isle of Rum in 1897 and was home to alligators as well as the multi-millionaire George Bullough.

Money was no object and Bullough made his fantasy castle as ostentatious on the inside as it was on the outside.

It is thought to be the finest surviving Edwardian interior in the UK.

The castle had every technological gadget imaginable including central heating, hydro-electric power for his electric lighting and the orchestrion - the Bang and Olufsen of its day.

The gardens contained heated pools for Bullough's menagerie of alligators and tropical turtles.

Last night's result means Kinloch Castle becomes one of ten buildings to be featured in the live final at the Tower of London on Sunday 14 September.

The other Scottish building that has already got through to the final is Mavisbank in Edinburgh.

A nationwide vote will decide which building should be given a new lease of life with money raised throughout the course of the series.

Colin McLean, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for Scotland, said of Kinloch Castle: "This spectacular building is filled with what was the height of luxury of its time and gives us an insight into the development of things such as heating, electrics and telecommunications, so we are delighted that it has reached the final.

"Kinloch Castle was in its prime during the golden age of lavish summer parties.

"With help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the voting public, it could be restored for visitors to once more enjoy all it has to offer."

Last night three more buildings were featured for viewers to choose between - all from the North East of England or Yorkshire.

They were Ravensworth Castle in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear; Haperly POW Camp in County Durham; and The Sham Castle and Glasshouse at Wentworth Castle in Stainsborough, near Barnsley.

This Friday's episode of Restoration (5 September) will reveal which of these will become the eighth building to go through to the final.

Lines are now open and viewers can vote by calling 0901 077 77 77.

Restoration is produced by Endemol UK Productions for 91热爆 Scotland and currently transmits on 91热爆 TWO on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9.00pm.

Restoration voting lines are open for three days for each programme from 2.00am on the day prior to transmission until midnight on the day after.
