The beautiful
stretches of lakes, grazing marshes, fens and woodlands synonymous
with Norfolk and Suffolk are better known as the Broads.

This wetland
area, which includes 50 shallow lakes, is a protected area and has
the same status as a national park.
The lakes were hand dug in the medieval era when the peat was collected
and used for fuel.

In 1989 the
Broads Authority was set up to protect and enhance the area's
natural beauty and its wildlife.
The Broads
are home to several species of very rare flora and fauna.

Broads Authority is also responsible for the management of the waterways,
which ensures that every year thousands of boating enthusiasts and
holidaymakers are able to navigate down the many miles of idyllic
waterways.
